A friend called today seeking a charitable donation for a local Des Moines nonprofit – but to be honest I feel far more pressed to donate to far-away places in far more desperate need such as Haiti and now Chile. I do wonder what the new calls to help Chile will mean for Haiti – which was much poorer to begin with than Chile and where the death toll is greater and presumably so too is the damage. Although losing 795 people, to date, in Chile is hardly a minor death toll. Nor are the estimates of 1.5 million homes destroyed or damaged.
One source of relief – our neighbor Peter, a U of Iowa sophomore studying in Chile, reported via Facebook that he’s okay.
