United policy for putting a ticket “on hold” is kind of dicey

Yesterday, I requested a refund for a ticket within 24 hours of  buying it from United. Which is the airline’s convoluted, self-serving way of adhering to the new consumer-friendly regulation that airlines must offer a 24 hold for people making reservations.  But it was hard to tell if my refund is guaranteed because I got back an email that said “Your refund request has been submitted…Please understand that all refund requests are subject to review, and processing of your request may take 7 to 10 business days, at which point a follow-up email will be sent.”

Hmmmm. I called United to try to get some assurance that I would get a refund – and got this, sort of, from an Indian-sounding woman who appeared to be reading from a customer service script.  So we’ll see.

I actually DID get a United ticket yesterday but it’s slightly different than the one I had originally bought. There is an option to revise the tix within 24 hours of buying but it didn’t give me the specific revision I wanted (which is for a return flight from Tucson to Chicago instead of my original plan of Tucson to Des Moines.) I BETTER not be charged for TWO tickets!!
